Hey, I'm Katie

MEET YOUR COUNSELOR

I am a recently graduated counselor currently practicing under supervision as I work toward full licensure, as well as certification in play therapy. I provide services through Katie Adam Counseling, located in Rapid City, South Dakota.

I use a compassionate, client-centered approach and incorporate play therapy techniques, sand tray therapy, art therapy methods, mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support clients in reaching their full potential. I specialize in working with children ages 3–18, as well as parents, families, and postpartum mothers. My areas of focus include depression, anxiety, behavioral challenges, relationship concerns, trauma, low self-esteem, and ADHD.

I am passionate about creating a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow. My goal is to help individuals and families build meaningful skills and lasting resilience that extend beyond the counseling room.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree from Black Hills State University in 2015 and my Master’s degree from South Dakota State University in 2025. My background includes experience working with diverse populations through internships and my time as a teacher, which continues to inform my approach to counseling.

I am a dedicated counselor with a passion for supporting children, parents, and families through every stage of life. Before becoming a counselor, I spent eight years teaching locally in the elementary setting. During this time I developed a deep understanding of children's emotional, social, and developmental needs. That experience continues to shape my approach today. This allows me to meet each child with patience, compassion, understanding, and genuine care.

As a mother myself, I understand both the joy and the challenges that come with parenting, including the unique transitions of the postpartum period. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where children, parents, and mothers can feel seen, heard, and understood.

Having lived in the Black Hills for most of my life, I feel a strong connection to this community and the families within it. My background in both education and counseling allows me to thoughtfully support individuals and families as they grow, heal, and navigate life's challenges together.
